PBIS

Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports

Our Role

Student Support Systems supports MPS by supporting the prevention-based framework for organizing evidence-based behavioral supports into an integrated continuum that enhances academic and social outcomes for all students by providing coaching; training; resources and on going technical support related to PBIS.  Student Support Systems will support effective school environments that maximize academic achievement and behavioral competence of all learners in MPS.

What is PBIS?

PBIS is a whole school three-tiered approach to decreasing disruptive behaviors and increasing student success and achievement. PBIS is the system, data, and practices required to achieve measurable outcomes.

PBIS is not:

  • A program

  • A curriculum

  • A one-size-fits-all approach

  • What students will do

PBIS is not for students; PBIS is for ADULTS. Your reaction determines whether a behavior will happen again or not. To successfully change a student's behavior, we must be willing to change our own behavior.

PBIS Philosophy

  • PBIS is not for students.  PBIS is for ADULTS.

  • Problem behavior can be reduced by simply reinforcing appropriate behavior.

  • Behavior is learned, functional, contextual, and human.

  • Behavior expectations must be taught in the same way teachers would address any skill deficit.
